Red pomfret/Pacu is a freshwater species of fish that is native to South America. . It is now a common species that can be caught mainly in private ponds. Red pomfret/Pacu is currently bred throughout the country in ponds.
Red pomfret/Pacu fish has the reputation of being a vegetarian, though it is more correctly a omnivore. It can be taken on dough bait, worms, bread and a variety of other bait by fishermen.
Red pomfret/Pacu fish grow quite rapidly and can reach weights of over 3kgs. They are also an excellent food fish. It is one of fresh water cheap fish, with huge quantity farmed whole round year.
As a food fish pacu is apparently very tasty. Its natural diet of fruit and nuts is said to enhance the flavour of the flesh. As the fish is so large cuts are often sold on the bone in a similar way to pork ribs. The flesh of Red pomfret/Pacu is firm, medium flavored and pleasant. There is a small dark strip down the center under the skin which tastes just a bit oily, but not unpleasantly so. The flesh holds together well in all forms of cooking and can be cooked skin-on or skin-off. The belly, thin on most fish, is thick, stiff and fatty, as it is on a milkfish.
Being a home-style dish, Red pomfret/Pacu is simple to cook. Red pomfret/Pacu is a welcomed fish among the people, for it has more meat and few bones. It is rich in protein, unsaturated fatty acids and multi-microelements. Thus, it is really a good food helping to replenish qi (essential energy), nourish the blood and calm the nerves.
